Dividends in May/June 2023

It's been a period with plenty of dividend payments which is always enjoyable especially now when I need to take out money instead of adding.

E.On paid out 204.00 € of which the German taxman kept 53.80 € and I was left with 150.20 € as cash on my broker account.

Intel paid out 44.75 €, USA tax office withheld 6.71 € and I was left with 38.04 € in cash.

TJX paid me 19.78 €, US withheld 2.96 € and I got 16.82 € on my broker account.

The next dividend payment I'm not really happy about. I wanted Luc to keep re-investing the earnings into the business or other endeavours for that matter!

Tessenderlo paid out 127.50 €, the taxman in Belgium kept 38.25 € and I got 89.25 € on my broker account.

IBM provided me with 38.34 €, tax withheld was 5.76 € and I got 32.58 € in cash.

Dividends from January to April 2020

With this publication I am now finally on top of things again! All the dividends from the past has been sorted out (2018 and 2019) and now I have caught up with the dividends payments during 2020. I have also managed to make my simplistic analysis of all my current holdings and unfortunately all of them are not in the state that one would have liked to see. The three big ones there are my two German banks DB and Coba but also K+S has now joined the children choir of sorrow.

During these four months I have received:

Two dividend payments from Nike in total 17.63 €
Associated British Foods paid out 40.23 €
DBAG gave a nice payment of 232.50 €
Intel arrived with 39.88 €
TJX with measly 13.10 €
IBM with 35.48 €
and finally BP with 72.06 €

As tradition holds all dividends are re-invested with my monthly purchase.

This year will most likely not be very fruitful in terms of dividends due to two reasons:

1. Over 50% of my holdings are in non dividend paying ETFs
2. Many companies have decided to hold on to the cash from 2019.

I've also started to read other finance blogs and it is interesting to see how many of them have handed in the towel. I hope this is because they got tired of writing articles and that they privately are still enjoying the great fun of investing!

I hope all of you are busy reading up on companies and catching some good ones that are now more reasonably priced and you can be sure that I will, in the end of each month!

Analysis of BP 2020

Logo of BP 2018

ISIN GB0007980591 | WKN 850517

Business: A British oil giant. They are divided into two business units which are: Upstream (extracting gas and oil) and Downstream (fuels, lubricants and petrochemicals). They currently have five brands: BP(oil and gas), Aral (gas stations where I buy all my petrol), Castrol (lubricants), ampm (convenience stores) and Wild Bean Café (cafés).

Active: 79 countries world wide employing around 70,100 people

P/E: 19.48

Here you can find the previous analysis of BP 2018.

With significant drop in share price due to A. Pandemic and B. Oil price the P/E of BP is still  too high with 19.5 even though it has "normalized" a little and the P/B is at 0.8 which is great. This actually gibes a go from Graham. The earnings to sales are silly low with only 2% as is the ROE with 4.3%. The book to debt ratio is not so good with 0.5.
In the last five years they have actually seen and increase in their revenue of 4.6%, per year which is good and gives us a motivated P/E of around 15 to 17 which means that BP is still slightly overvalued by the market considering their earnings.
They pay out a dividend of 11.1% which does however correspond to almost 215% of their earnings so unless they increase their earnings they really should reduce this instead of taking onboard more debt as they have been doing in the last five years... but I understand any company taking on debt when it is almost for free as it has been for oh, so many years now.

Future: The oil and gas industry is a dying breed and BP have started to be more involved in sustainable options such as biofuel, wind etc. Are they enough on the ball? I honestly do not know.

Conclusion: Graham says yes to BP but I am uncertain. I've always enjoyed the dividends but the debt start to worry me more and more for each passing year as does the future for oil and gas companies, a future which has always been clear, but is getting closer for each passing year. I will remain as a more cautious shareholder from now on.

Logo of TJX 2018
For my 32 shares in TJX I received in total 10.52 € in dividends. The taxman took 1.58€ from this and I was left with 8.94 € as cash.

To find out more about TJX then please click here.

Logo of IBM 2018

Analysis of BP 2018

Logo of BP 2018

ISIN GB0007980591 | WKN 850517

Business: A British oil giant. They are divided into two business units which are: Upstream (extracting gas and oil) and Downstream (fuels, lubricants and petrochemicals). They currently have five brands: BP(oil and gas), Aral (gas stations where I buy all my petrol), Castrol (lubricants), ampm (convenience stores) and Wild Bean Café (cafés).

Active: 70 countries world wide employing around 74,000 people (they still claim this on their homepage)

P/E: 43.7

Here you can find the previous analysis of BP 2017.

Contrarian analysis of BP 2018 with P/E, P/B, ROE as well as dividend.

The P/E of BP is still too high with 43.7 even though it has "normalized" a little and the P/B is up at 1.5 which is great. Still from Graham this is a no go. The earnings to sales are silly low with only 1% as is the ROE with 3.4%. The book to debt ratio are ok with 0.6.
In the last five years they have seen a massive decline in revenue, -8.5%, per year which is bad and gives us a motivated P/E of around 8 which means that BP is overvalued by the market considering their earnings.
They pay out a very nice dividend of 5.7% which does however correspond to almost 250% of their earnings so at some point they need to get themselves sorted out to keep sustaining these dividends OR make a dividend cut.

Conclusion: Graham clearly says no and I am undecided. Considering the latest oil price increases the future does indeed start to look better for BP but it is something that is completely out of their control and on top of that we do not know if it will remain this high or increase for that matter. It could just as well decrease to previous levels and that will have a massive impact on BPs earnings. Only two things are good and that is P/B and dividends. I will remain as a grumpy shareholder.

BP annual report 2017

Front page of BP annual 2017 report

For the report in full please click here and to see the previous summary regarding BP annual report 2016 or why not take a look at the latest analysis of BP 2017.

The chairman's as well as the CEO's letter only contained happiness. They claimed that it was an excellent year... well... I say... They are still not up in earnings to cover the dividends that they pay out and without the price increase of oil then I am sure that the letter would not be so joyful.

If we take a look at the financial statement below then we see that the revenue did indeed increase (higher oil price so external effect), we also see that the purchase costs increased substantially so they did not manage to control that better but they did however manage to decrease their production and manufacturing expenses which is good.

Financial statement of BP 2017

Conclusion: The leaders of BP are happy about their accomplishments during 2017. I am less pleased. The chairman of the board will step down sometime during 2018 and we will have to see who takes over. I will remain as a grumpy shareholder.
