Dividends April 2024

Nike paid out 13.71 €, the US taxman took 2.06 € which left me with 11.65 €.

Rio Tinto paid out 772.21 € of which all was received as cash.

Barclays paid out 117.77 € of which all was in cash to my broker account.

HSBC paid out 203.26 € all received as cash.

It should be mentioned that the tax rate in Sweden is 30% on capital gains such as dividends. In every case in the end of the year I declare these dividends and pay a tax up to the 30% in Sweden. So for the US shares I need to pay 15% more and for the UK shares I need to pay the full 30% from what was paid out. So yes, I get it out as cash but with the tax declaration I pay in the money required for my capital gains.

Dividends from January to April 2020

With this publication I am now finally on top of things again! All the dividends from the past has been sorted out (2018 and 2019) and now I have caught up with the dividends payments during 2020. I have also managed to make my simplistic analysis of all my current holdings and unfortunately all of them are not in the state that one would have liked to see. The three big ones there are my two German banks DB and Coba but also K+S has now joined the children choir of sorrow.

During these four months I have received:

Two dividend payments from Nike in total 17.63 €
Associated British Foods paid out 40.23 €
DBAG gave a nice payment of 232.50 €
Intel arrived with 39.88 €
TJX with measly 13.10 €
IBM with 35.48 €
and finally BP with 72.06 €

As tradition holds all dividends are re-invested with my monthly purchase.

This year will most likely not be very fruitful in terms of dividends due to two reasons:

1. Over 50% of my holdings are in non dividend paying ETFs
2. Many companies have decided to hold on to the cash from 2019.

I've also started to read other finance blogs and it is interesting to see how many of them have handed in the towel. I hope this is because they got tired of writing articles and that they privately are still enjoying the great fun of investing!

I hope all of you are busy reading up on companies and catching some good ones that are now more reasonably priced and you can be sure that I will, in the end of each month!

Analysis of Nike 2020

Logo of Nike 2018

Company: Nike
Business: An American company that are selling and developing athletic footwear, apparel, equipment and accessories. They have several brands: Nike, Nike+, Hurley, Jordan Brand and Converse to mention a few.

Active: They are present world wide and they are known world wide by name and symbol.

P/E: 35

For a previous analysis please click on Analysis of Nike 2020.

The P/E of Nike is extremely high with 35 and so is the P/B with almost 16 which gives a clear no go from Graham. Earnings to sales are ok with 10% and the ROE is excellent with 44% but leveraged. The book to debt ratio is low with 0.6.
In the last five years they have had a yearly revenue growth rate of 5% which is good and this gives us a motivated P/E of 18 to 20 which means that the market is currently significantly overvaluing Nike.
They pay a tiny dividend of 1% which happily only correspond to 35% of their earnings so they should be able to at least keep it up.

Future: Nike is a strong brand even though they are dancing around with Adidas, Under Armour and c/o on which brand is the coolest and most fashionable. My nephews who are what I would call fashionistas age 8-12 went from Adidas 2 to 3 years ago to Nike. When I sold my Adidas I considered them to be strongly over valued PE > 30 and that was at around 165 EUR per share since then Adidas have been up above 300 EUR per share. Timing was in that case not ideal. Sportswear will continue to be sold and Nike is a well known brand. I should have had both in my portfolio by the look of things.

Conclusion: Graham says no and at this level I am not interested in increasing my holding. I will however not sell what I currently have either.

P/E: 25.6

For a previous analysis please click on analysis of Nike 2017.

Contrarian analysis of Nike 2018 with P/E, P/B, ROE as well as dividend.

The P/E of Nike is very high with 25.6 and so is the P/B with 8.8 which gives a clear no go from Graham. Earnings to sales are ok with 12% and the ROE is excellent with 34.2%. The book to debt ratio is full ok with 1.1.
In the last five years they have had a yearly revenue growth rate of 6.3% which is excellent and this gives us a motivated P/E of 19 to 21 which means that the market is currently overvaluing Nike.
They pay a tiny dividend of 1% which happily only correspond to 27% of their earnings so they should be able to keep it up.

Conclusion: Graham says no and so do I. The P/E and P/B is too high, the ROE is great but the dividend is meaningless. I will remain as a shareholder fully knowing that next year will be a tough one due to the taxes but I will not increase my position any further.

Nike annual report 2017

Front page of Nike 2017 annual report

To view the report in full please go here and to find out more about the previous year then please visit Nike annual report 2016 and for the analysis of Nike then please click on analysis of Nike 2017.

Due to Nike running a broken year I am far behind in the reporting. Looking at the Q3 2018 which they have filed, they are also taking a massive tax hit which is over 70% and leads to a significant decrease in earnings. Anyway... if we look at the financial statement below then we see that Nike managed to increase their revenue from 32 to 34 billion USD and they managed to increase their earnings from 3.8 to 4.2 billion USD which is an excellent result! They had in the end of their broken 2017 year bought back shares to a value of 4.4 billion USD which leaves around 7.5 billion left for buying back shares.

Financial statement of Nike 2017

Conclusion: 2017 was a good year for Nike. From what we can see 2018 will be far from as good as 2017 due to taxes but also due to a decreased growth rate in their revenue and ultimately earnings. I will remain as a shareholder well aware of what is coming.
